Porto.
Where life slows down.

Portugal's second city and, for many, the better choice. Smaller, more authentically Portuguese, and significantly cheaper than Lisbon. A world-class food scene and a quality of life that's harder to put a number on.

Why Porto

The honest case for moving here.

Not a travel brochure. The real reasons British professionals and families are choosing Porto — and the trade-offs worth knowing before you commit.

Genuinely cheaper than Lisbon

Central Porto rents run roughly 20–30% below equivalent Lisbon neighbourhoods. Daily costs — food, coffee, transport — are similarly lower. On a UK salary, Porto stretches significantly further.

More authentically Portuguese

Porto hasn't been as thoroughly shaped by digital nomads and short-term tourists as Lisbon. The city retains more of its original character — local restaurants outnumber tourist traps, and integration into Portuguese daily life is more natural.

Growing remote work infrastructure

Porto's co-working scene has expanded significantly. The startup and creative community is smaller than Lisbon's but tighter and more accessible for people arriving without existing networks.

The honest trade-off

Porto is smaller and quieter — a feature for many people and a limitation for others. The international expat infrastructure is less developed than Lisbon's. The weather is noticeably wetter, particularly October through March.

Neighbourhoods

Where in Porto?

Porto's neighbourhoods vary significantly in character and price. Here's an honest overview of the areas most relevant to British expats.

Bonfim

Porto's rising neighbourhood. Independent cafés, co-working, natural wine bars — where the city's creative and remote worker community concentrates. The best value in Porto.

Cedofeita / Miragaia

Porto's arts and design district. The Gallery Mile, studios, and architecture practices. Slightly upmarket from Bonfim in both price and professional character.

Porto's famous riverside quarter. Extraordinary to look at, genuinely complicated to live in. Best as a landing pad for first arrivals, not a permanent address.
